American Express has re-launched its supplementary card bonus offer, and the rewards on several cards are higher than usual. If you hold a card that qualifies and have never added a supplementary card, this is one of the simplest ways to boost your points balance this year.

What is an Amex supplementary card?
A supplementary card is an additional card issued on your existing Amex account, usually for a partner or family member. The card is tied to the main cardholders spend and works as a secondary card to the Amex holders account. It carries no separate annual fee on the cards included in this offer. Holding a supplementary card doesn't count as holding a your own Amex card, therefore you are still able to get a welcome bonus in the future (provided you meet the other criteria).
Which cards are included in the offer?
Six Amex cards are covered by the enhanced offer: the Preferred Rewards Gold Card, The Platinum Card, the Marriott Bonvoy American Express, the Nectar Credit Card, and The American Express Rewards Card. The two Amex Cashback cards are also included, with a cash bonus rather than points.
The table below sets out what each card pays for a first supplementary card.
Card | New bonus | Usual bonus |
American Express Preferred Rewards Gold | 9,000 Membership Rewards points | 3,000 points |
The Platinum Card | 12,000 Membership Rewards points | 5,000 points |
Marriott Bonvoy American Express | 6,000 Marriott Bonvoy points | 3,000 points |
Nectar Credit Card | 6,000 Nectar points | 3,000 points |
The American Express Rewards Card | 5,000 Membership Rewards points | Under 2,000 points |
Are there any conditions?
The offer only applies to the first supplementary card ever added to your account not during the application process. If you have already issued one, adding another will not trigger the bonus. There is no spend requirement, so the points are earned simply by having the card issued.
How do I claim the bonus?
Amex supplementary cards be added through its dedicated supplementary card page rather than the general account management area, as applications made elsewhere may not be tracked correctly for the bonus.

When does the offer end?
The offer closes on 31st October. If you hold a qualifying card and have not yet added a supplementary cardholder, this window offers the best rates seen on these cards to date.
Remember, holding a supplementary card doesn't count as holding a personal Amex card, therefore you are still able to get a welcome bonus on a card as a new member, even if you have held a supplementary card.
