Can You Earn Avios on Amazon?

This question came from one of our followers on a fortnightly Instagram stories Q&A. But I thought for the benefit of all I'd write a post.
The short answer? Yes and no.
Amazon is absent from the Avios eStore, which some of your may think is bizarre given it's where most of us do half our shopping these days and surely they would want in? In truth, Amazon are so dominant in our lives they don't need to generally don't need to offer rewards to entice you in. Same-day delivery will do that for them.
But there are a few ways to squeeze some Avios out of your Amazon addiction.

The Boosted Route: Amazon Devices
Avios does have a dedicated partnership with Amazon, but it's pretty narrow. You can earn 3 Avios per £1 on Amazon Devices – but only Amazon Devices that may or may not listen in to every conversation you have.
This includes:
Echo devices
Fire TV
Fire Tablets
Kindle E-readers
Blink and Ring products
Eero
Amazon device accessories
You need to click through from the Avios shopping portal to access this offer, and you won't earn Avios on anything else in your basket. So if you're buying a new Echo along with some books and a jumper, only the Echo earns Avios.
Is 3 Avios per £1 decent? It's not bad – better a lot of other eStore offers – but I'd rather not let Jeff Bezos into my home. And don't get me started on how annoying I find Ring doorbells... A subscription for a doorbell!
The Universal Method: Your Credit Card
Amazon accept essentially any credit card, including American Express. There is no hack here, it's just paying with your normal credit card. To recap, your options here would be:
BA Amex: 1 Avios per £1
BA Premium Plus Amex: 1.5 Avios per £1
Barclaycard Avios: 1 Avios per £1
Barclaycard Avios Plus: 1.5 Avios per £1
Amex Membership Rewards cards: Membership Rewards points convert 1:1 to Avios

This works on everything Amazon sells, no clicking through portals required. But it's not Amazon-specific ,as this is just the same earning rate wherever you spend.
What Doesn't Work Anymore
If you've been Googling this topic, you might have found articles mentioning TopCashback. This used to be the best method for earning Avios on Amazon.
TopCashback offered cashback on Amazon purchases (typically 1-11% depending on the category), which you could then convert to Avios at 105 Avios per £1 of cashback.
Unfortunately, Avios ended their partnership with TopCashback on 31 December 2023. You can still earn cashback through TopCashback or Quidco on Amazon Devices, but there's no way to convert it to Avios anymore, and the rate of return is lower than that you'd get from the Avios eStore anyway.
The Verdict on Avios at Amazon
Can you earn Avios on Amazon? Yes, but don't get excited.
Unless you're specifically buying Amazon hardware, you're limited to whatever your credit card earns. There's no special Amazon deal in the Avios eStore, and the old TopCashback workaround is long gone. Ultimately, your best option is a good Avios-earning credit card and lowered expectations.
I'm sorry I couldn't bring better news.
