Dreaming of extra legroom, lounge access, and a touch of luxury? British Airways has just made it easier with their new upgrade bidding platform. Following in the footsteps of airlines like Virgin Atlantic, BA now offers passengers the chance to bid for upgrades, making premium travel more accessible than ever. Instead of paying full fare for World Traveller Plus, a Club cabin, or even First, you simply place a bid. Your offer could score you an upgraded seat if you outbid competing passengers. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of bidding on your next upgrade with British Airways.

British Airways Bidding for Upgrades
Could this be the trick to your next upgrade?

Checking Your Eligibility

Before you can bid, you’ll need your British Airways booking reference and the passenger’s last name. Head to the upgrade portal, enter those details, and the system will immediately tell you if your flight is open for bids. BA seems to be rolling this in gradually, so not all routes will be available immediately.

Sounds simple, right?

Placing Your Bid

  1. Select Your Offer Range - If eligible, you’ll see a slider displaying a minimum and maximum bid amount. Drag it to choose what you’re willing to pay. Offers can start as low as a token amount and climb into the thousands, depending on your cabin and route.

  2. Submit Payment Details - You only pay if your bid succeeds, but you must supply valid payment information when you submit. Your payment card will be authorised for the relevant amount, though no payment will be taken at that stage.

  3. Modify or Withdraw - Changed your mind? You can tweak or cancel your bid up to six and a half hours before departure, or until an upgrade is confirmed, whichever comes first.

Waiting for Confirmation

Typically decisions will land in your inbox up to 48 hours before the flight departs. Offers may be accepted as close as six hours prior to departure, so if your offer has not been rejected, please keep an eye on your emails and junk folder. A successful email will confirm your new cabin, at which point you’ll enjoy priority check‑in, lounge entry (where available), and the elevated service that comes with premium travel.

FAQs at a Glance

  • What if I don’t win? Your card isn’t charged, and your original booking remains unchanged.

  • Does my baggage allowance change? No, baggage allowance will remain as per your original booked allowance.

  • Can I bid on multiple passengers? If there are multiple customers in your booking, you must offer to upgrade all of them. The amount you offer will be on a per-customer basis, with the total offer displayed at the time you make your offer.

  • Do bids ever close early? Occasionally, once capacity is fully allocated, bidding may close before the standard deadline.

  • Which airlines are included? Currently British Airways and select oneworld partners. If one of your segments is on a partner airline, then you will be redirected to their website.

  • Can I pay with Avios? No.

  • I was upgraded and I don’t see the right cabin listed when I view my booking online - When viewing your booking online some details of your booking will continue to show your original booked cabin.

Key Terms & Conditions in Brief

  • Non‑Refundable: Once accepted, upgrade payments are final, except where the following apply:

    • BA cancels your flight; or

    • BA is required to make changes to your flight for operational, safety or security reasons; or

    • Otherwise as required under applicable regulations.

  • At Carrier Discretion: Even if you win the bid, upgrades are ultimately subject to seat availability and the airline’s final approval.

  • Offer Validity: Bids expire automatically at the deadline if not accepted, and no payment is taken.

  • Tier Points and Avios: Members of the British Airways Club are eligible for Avios and tier points associated with the Upgrade. If these are not credited at the time of the flight, you can claim them retrospectively within six months once you have completed your journey.

Is It Worth It?

For many travellers, bidding can deliver premium experiences at prices far below standard upgrade fares. If you value extra comfort but don’t want to splurge on a full-fare Business or Premium Economy seat, this auction-style system is a flexible, risk‑free option: you set the price, and you only pay if you win.

Whether you’re chasing lounge visits on a long-haul journey or a quiet seat on a shorter hop, giving the upgrade auction a try could be your ticket to flying better for less. Just remember to watch the deadlines, pick a bid you’re happy with, and keep an eye on your inbox for that all-important confirmation!
