Get oneworld Sapphire (BA Silver equivalent) with almost any hotel status: status match offer ends 7 November

4 min read

If you hold pretty much any elite status with a hotel group, there is a flash status match live now to Gold Sparrow in Royal Jordanian’s Royal Club programme, which is the equivalent of oneworld Sapphire, the same status tier as BA Silver.

That is the sweet spot tier to hold if you fly British Airways (or any other oneworld airline) as you’ll get lounge access for you and a guest, seat selection, etc.

The difference with this status match offer compared to past ones with Royal Jordanian, is that even the lowest tiers of hotel status can now be matched to oneworld Sapphire, opening this up to even more people.

This offer ends 7 November 2026, and you can apply here.

Royal Jordanian status match: use your hotel status to get Oneworld Sapphire until 7th November

(If status matching is new to you, the idea is that one programme will hand you elite status on the strength of status you already hold somewhere else. Your existing status is proof you’re worth having, so they let you skip the queue and give you theirs on top of the status you use to match. Essentially it's poaching. Helena covers the topic in more detail in her guide to status matching.)

Which hotel programmes match to Gold Sparrow (oneworld Sapphire) and how much does it cost?

Twelve hotel programmes are included, with numerous tiers available to be matched:

The match costs $149 (about £115) if you hold mid or top-tier status with any of the programmes above. If you only have entry-level status, you can still get Gold Sparrow, but it costs $248 (about £190). Either way, you end up with the same status for 12 months.

Can you use Amex Platinum hotel status for the Royal Jordanian match?

Yes!

The Amex Platinum comes with complimentary hotel elite status across several of the programmes on the eligible list.

Here is what the card gives you:

Hilton, Marriott, Radisson, Meliá and Accor are all among the twelve programmes covered by this match. So if you hold an Amex Platinum, you already have status with five of them without having stayed a single night. Just make sure to enrol for each status via the Amex app or website first, as they aren’t activated automatically

You will also get all the above statuses, apart from Accor, as a supplementary cardholder.

All of the statuses offered by the Amex Platinum match to Gold Sparrow for $149.

What does oneworld Sapphire get you?

If you hold oneworld Sapphire you will get the following:

  • Access to Business Class lounges, for you and a guest

  • Access to Business Class check-in

  • Access to preferred or pre-reserved seating

  • Priority on waitlists and when on standby

  • Priority boarding

  • Extra baggage allowance

  • Priority baggage handling with some airlines

Who is eligible for the offer?

You need to live in the UK or one of the 27 EU member states, and you need ID from that country, such as a passport or driving licence. You may be asked to pass an ID check before the match is approved.

You must also pay with a card issued in one of the eligible countries. If you are an expat, or your main card comes from outside the UK or EU, check this first.

The EU countries covered are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

How does the status match work?

You need a Royal Club membership number, and joining the programme is free. Then you apply through Status Match with that number, a valid email address and proof of your hotel status. A screenshot of your status card should suffice.

You should hear within three days whether you have been approved. After that, it can take up to five business days for the new status to appear in your Royal Club account. It is valid for 12 months, and your digital card is available online, because no physical cards are sent out.

If you are turned down, you will be told by email.

Royal Jordanian status match: use your hotel status to get Oneworld Sapphire until 7th November

Are there any catches with the Royal Jordanian status match?

Yes, a couple, and I would rather you read them here than find out later.

First, you do not receive the upgrade vouchers that normally come with holding Gold Sparrow. Those only arrive once you re-qualify for the status yourself.

Second, be careful about where your flight activity goes. If you attach your Royal Club number to your booking to get oneworld benefits, any miles or tier points you would earn will go to your Royal Club account, and not your BA Club account. They cannot be removed, reversed or moved to another frequent flyer programme. So if you are building up Avios in the British Airways Club, think carefully about if you'd rather have benefits from RJ, or Avios in your BA account.

When does the offer end?

The hotel offer is valid until 7 November 2026. Royal Jordanian and Status Match can end or change the promotion at their discretion, so do not leave it to the last day.

I book lots of flights with BA using Avios I’ve collected with Amex Platinum. Can I book an Avios economy flight as normal thru my BA account but get the benefit of seat selection, BA lounge access etc using the RJ status?

You mention about being careful where the points go and using a different club number on check in. I didn't realise this is possible? So you book the flight and use RJ membership, reap the rewards (mainly looking for free seat selection) and then add BA number when checking in?

Sorry, poor phrasing on our part.

When you book the flight if you put in an RJ number, that is where any miles earned will go, but you will get your benefits such as free seat selection.

You are able to change your frequent flyer number, so after you've selected your seat for free, you could put your BA number in instead, and reap the Avios.

I'll try find a good post explaining this and I'll link it here.
