Travelling with a baby can feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to navigating airline policies. If you are planning a trip with British Airways and have booked your ticket using Avios, you might be wondering how to add an infant under two years old to your booking.

The good news is that British Airways makes this process relatively straightforward, whether your baby will travel on your lap or in their own seat. This guide explains everything you need to know about booking an infant ticket with Avios, ensuring you are well-prepared before you fly.

Booking a Lap Infant with Avios

If your baby is travelling on your lap (often referred to as a "babe in arms"), British Airways charges a reduced fare. Instead of paying the full number of Avios and taxes, the cost is set at 10% of the Avios required for an adult ticket, plus 10% of the applicable taxes and charges.

For example, if your adult redemption flight costs 90,000 Avios plus £450 in fees, your baby’s ticket will be priced at 9,000 Avios plus £45. This applies regardless of the cabin you are flying in, from Economy to First Class.

In addition, on long-haul flights booked under the Reward Flight Saver scheme, infants will also be charged 10% of the Reward Flight Saver fees.

How to Add an Infant to Your Booking

  • At the time of booking: When booking your flight using Avios on the British Airways website, you can include your infant as part of the booking process. The system will automatically calculate the 10% Avios and fees for the infant.

  • After booking: If you’ve already confirmed your ticket and need to add your baby later, you will need to contact British Airways directly. An agent will add the infant to your reservation and confirm the correct Avios and charges. It is essential to ask for the infant’s ticket number once the booking is updated, as this ensures your baby is officially ticketed.

Infant in Their Own Seat

If you prefer your baby to travel in their own seat, perhaps using a car seat, this is treated differently. British Airways considers this a child booking, which means you will need to pay the full Avios fare plus full taxes and charges for the infant’s seat. This cannot be arranged online; instead, you must contact British Airways reservations to make the booking.

Important Tips for Booking an Infant Ticket

  1. Double-check ticketing: Always confirm that your infant has been properly ticketed. Sometimes, reservations appear updated but the infant does not have a valid ticket number until check-in.

  2. Know the difference: A lap infant is significantly cheaper in Avios and fees, while a separate seat will be charged at full child rates.

  3. Plan early: Availability for redemption flights is already limited, so secure your infant booking as soon as possible to avoid issues closer to your travel date.

How to Book an Infant Ticket with British Airways Using Avios: Final Thoughts

British Airways offers a clear policy for booking infants on Avios tickets. If your child is under two years old and travelling on your lap, you only need to pay 10% of the Avios and 10% of the fees charged for your adult booking. If you prefer your infant to have their own seat, the booking will be priced as a child fare at full Avios and full fees. While you can add a lap infant online during the initial booking, changes after booking require a call to British Airways.

By understanding these rules and confirming that your infant is fully ticketed, you can travel with peace of mind knowing everything is in order.
