After a several-year hiatus, Virgin Atlantic is going to Cancun. Starting today - 19th October - Virgin will launch three weekly flights from London Heathrow to Mexico's Caribbean coast.

If this sounds familiar, that's because it is. Virgin last flew this route pre-pandemic from Gatwick, and now they're giving it another go with Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday departures on the A350-1000.

It's currently the only direct option from Heathrow to Cancun, which will please anyone who'd rather not transit through the US or Madrid, or is allergic to going to Gatwick to fly TUI or British Airways.

The schedule works reasonably well for a week-long holiday - allowing you to fly out Friday, back the following Sunday, and you've got nine nights without burning too much annual leave. Virgin is also banking on connections with their partners Aeromexico and LATAM to shift the route beyond just beach holidays, offering onward connections to Mexico City, Santiago, Buenos Aires, and Lima.

But if you're looking at spending your points, then you're in luck! The value of your redemptions does vary cabin to cabin, starting at the ludicrously expensive for Upper Class, to some exceptional value in Economy.

For the below searches we've used our favourite free to use tool, vseats.io, searching for 7 night holidays between now and the end of March, and we've had our results displayed with the cheapest first. Upper Class isn't cheap starting from an eye-watering 250,000 Virgin Points.

Premium is where things start to get interesting. I would say sub 100,000 Virgin Points return is a good value redemption.

And Economy is damn right cheeky. When we talk about good deals or not needing a million points to be in the points game, this is it. Only 12,000 Virgin Points return is exceptionally good value, saving yourself hundreds of pounds in the process.

Happy hunting!
