Why do I have to phone up to use my Virgin Atlantic Reward Voucher?
This is the rare occasion where British Airways comes out ahead on IT (pick those jaws up off the floor!).
When you earn either the American Express Companion Voucher, or the Barclays Cabin Upgrade Voucher, both of them go straight into your BA account. You go to book the flight online, tick the voucher, done (yes, I am simplifying the process somewhat). No phone call, no agent, no terrible sounding hold music.
Virgin, meanwhile, still operates like we all have half an hour to spend waiting on the phone. So, why do you have to phone up to claim your Virgin Atlantic Reward Voucher?

Why does this happen
Because the voucher and the booking system live in two different places, and only a human can join them up.
Your Reward Voucher is earned on a Virgin Atlantic credit card issued by Virgin Money. Once you've earned the voucher by spending either £10,000 on the Reward+ card, or £20,000 on the free card, this voucher sits in a Virgin Money database. Meanwhile, your flights are obviously booked through the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. Those two systems, both controlled by the Virgin group, don't talk to each other. So to use the voucher, an agent at the Flying Club call centre has to log into the Virgin Money side, see your voucher, and apply it to your booking by hand.
That's the whole reason. It isn't a clever fraud check or a hidden rule. It's merely an inability to link up two systems.
Who to call, and what to have ready
Call the Flying Club Customer Centre on 0344 412 2414.
Don't phone cold. Sort the details first:
Decide whether you want the companion seat or the upgrade.
For an upgrade, check the price of the higher cabin, and deduct the cost of the seat in your current class (read more about upgrading here).
Have enough Virgin Points in your account to cover any top-up if the seat costs more than the voucher's value (if you don't have enough points, Virgin regularly runs points sales like this one)
Your voucher shows in your Flying Club account under My Account > Vouchers.
If you are a Red member, your voucher is worth upto 75,000 Virgin Points, whereas if you are Silver or Gold, it is worth upto 150,000 Virgin Points.
If you are a Silver or Gold member, you are able to transfer your voucher to another member free of charge. To do this you either have to phone up Virgin Atlantic (shock!), or use this online form. Now, this form is clearly not automated, relying on a human on the other end to action it, but I am nothing if not fair.
For the full rundown on earning, redeeming and the upgrade maths, our Ultimate Guide to Virgin Atlantic Reward Vouchers covers the lot.
Verdict
Even with dynamic pricing, the vouchers are still worth having.
But in 2026 it shouldn't need you to phone up to claim your voucher. If BA can do it, so can Virgin.
