Air France/KLM's Flying Blue devalues reward tickets from 8 September with "Light" fares at today's prices
We need to have a talk about devaluations, because that's what Air France/KLM are doing with their Flying Blue programme. But the way they're devaluing their programme may not be the way you expect.
Three ways a programme can devalue your redemptiom
I'd argue that a loyalty programme can take value off you in three ways.
It can put up the number of points needed, like BA did in December 2025.
It can put up the taxes and charges, so the cash you hand over alongside the points goes up, like Virgin did in April 2026.
Or it can leave both alone and take things out of the ticket instead. Same points, same cash, worse outcome.
That third one is what is happening here, as Flying Blue is splitting reward tickets on Air France and KLM into three versions of every cabin: Light, Standard and Flex, to match how they structure their cash tickets.
Light will not be a new cheaper option. Light will be the same price as the ticket you buy today, but with no lounge access, no flexibility if your plans change, and in some cabins, not even a checked bag. Meaning, to get the same perks included with your ticket that you would today, you'll have to pay more to get a Standard or Flex fare. You may see the problem.
What changes on 8 September
The new fares apply to flights Air France or KLM booked using Flying Blue points. Reward tickets on partner airlines are not affected, and neither are tickets you have already booked.
Just a reminder, if you book a business class redemption this afternoon, you get two 32kg checked bags, free seat selection at check-in, lounge access, and SkyPriority. Make a booking for the same price 8 September onwards, and you get the Light version of it, so keep those two thoughts front and centre when reading these tables.

Let's look at some of the cuts
The lounge cut for business light fares is what will likely enrage you, as this has always been a given. Status still works, meaning your SkyTeam Elite benefits apply on the day of departure whatever fare you booked. If your SkyTeam status is with a partner airline, change your FF number from Flying Blue to your SkyTeam airline of choice after booking.
They will also sell you lounge access, for example, access to the Air France lounges in 2E, 2F, or 2G in Paris Charles-de-Gaulle will cost €90.
Baggage is as equally as annoying. Light tickets in economy and premium economy give you nothing in the hold. Flying Blue calls Light "the essential option, ideal if you travel light", no **** sherlock!
Lastly, flexibility has been eroded on the Light fares. This is one of the last great perks of points redemptions, that if your plans change, you can cancel or move your flight and not be penalised too much. No more. Cancel a Light ticket and you will lose 100% of the points and cash used. The exception to this is if you hold Flying Blue Platinum or Ultimate status, you can cancel a Light reward fare and receive a refund.
Two things nobody can tell you yet
We do not yet know the price differences between the different fares, partly because Flying Blue prices their flights dynamically, as opposed to fixed, like BA and Qatar. The structure is not in doubt though. Light will cost what redemptions are today. This makes Standard the real replacement, and whatever the gap between those two turns out to be, that is the size of the devaluation.
The second is Virgin. You can book Air France and KLM flights with Virgin Points through the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. The Virgin site only sells three options when buying with points: Economy Classic, Premium and Upper. This is despite Virgin selling Economy Light and Economy Delight fares in cash. Standard is where I would expect Virgin Points bookings to match up with. That is just an educated guess based on alignment with Virgin's ticketing policies. If it changes, we will update this.
One way to keep the lounge, whatever fare you book
SkyTeam Elite Plus status still gets you lounge access, in any cabin, with a guest.
Verdict
If you have status, not much has happened. For everyone else, a business redemption means choosing between more points or turning up with one bag, no lounge, and no way out if your plans change.
Flying Blue still remains a good option to consider, as the UK airports Air France/KLM serve is vast, and the onward worldwide network is solid.
You have three weeks until this starts, and if you already have a booking, they are safe from these changes. If you have a Flying Blue redemption you were going to make anyway, make it now, while the lounge is still part of the ticket.
