Hang on... Are Amex Giving Different Bonuses on the Gold Card?

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the American Express Preferred Rewards Gold Card, you may have noticed something confusing this week. Depending on how you access the Amex website, you’ll either see a 40,000 Membership Rewards points sign-up bonus (as we covered here)… or a boosted 50,000 points bonus for the Amex Gold.

What’s Going On With The Amex Gold Bonus?

It appears that American Express is showing different welcome bonuses based on your cookie preferences. If you’ve visited their site before and have cookies stored, the higher 50,000 points offer is more likely to appear. However, if you’re browsing with a fresh browser (or with cookies cleared), you may only see the 40,000 points offer.

See how it say "This offer is tailored to you based on your cookie preference and may change." Well, this is how the offer appears on a cookie-less tab.

So it clearly pays to be indecisive!

What This Means for You

Both offers have the same requirements: spend £5,000 in the first six months to trigger the bonus. The only difference is how many points you’ll receive.

If you’re planning to apply, it’s worth checking in multiple times. Try opening a private/incognito window, or using a different device or browser to see which version of the bonus you’re shown.

Why Does This Matter

That extra 10,000 Membership Rewards points could be worth a return flight in Europe, a hotel night, or a healthy chunk towards a long-haul redemption when transferred to Avios. It’s a significant difference and one worth maximising if you can.
