British Airways frequent flyer programme is the Executive Club, which rewards loyal passengers with Avios points and Tier Points. While Avios can be redeemed for flights and upgrades, Tier Points help you progress through the membership tiers, unlocking additional benefits and privileges. Here’s a comprehensive guide to understanding and maximizing your British Airways Tier Points.

What Are Tier Points?

Tier Points are earned every time you fly with British Airways or its Oneworld partners on a revenue ticket. You do not accumulate Tier Points for Avios redemption flights. Unlike Avios, which are redeemed for rewards, Tier Points determine your membership level within the Executive Club. The higher your tier, the more exclusive the benefits you receive.

The Executive Club has four main tiers:

Blue

  • Entry Level: Automatically earned upon joining the Executive Club.

  • Blue members collect 6 Avios per £ spent.

Bronze

  • Tier Points Required: 300 Tier Points.

  • Flight Requirement: At least two eligible flights with BA or Iberia.

  • Benefits: Priority check-in, status freeze for Maternity/Paternity/Adoption, free seat selection 7 days before departure, priority class check-in.

  • Bronze members collect 7 Avios per £ spent.

Silver

  • Tier Points Required: 600 Tier Points.

  • Flight Requirement: At least four eligible flights with BA or Iberia.

  • Benefits: Access to BA and Oneworld lounges, status freeze for Maternity/Paternity/Adoption, priority check in and boarding, free seat selection at booking, extra baggage allowance.

  • Silver members collect 8 Avios per £ spent.

Gold

  • Tier Points Required: 1,500 Tier Points.

  • Flight Requirement: At least four eligible flights with BA or Iberia.

  • Benefits: Access to first-class lounges, status freeze for Maternity/Paternity/Adoption, additional Avios earning, access to Gold Priority Rewards, priority waitlisting, check in and boarding.

  • Gold members collect 9 Avios per £ spent.

Additionally Gold members can earn additional benefits after additional tier point accumulation, these include a Gold Upgrade for Two voucher after 2,500 Tier Points, Two Gold Upgrade for One vouchers at 3,500 Tier Points, One Gold Executive Club partner card and two Silver cards at 5,000 Tier Points, and Concorde Room access at 5,000 Tier Points.

Tier Points are earned based on the class of travel, fare class, and distance flown. For instance, a flight from London to JFK would accumulate 20-70 Tier Points in economy (depending on fare code), 90 in premium economy, 140 in business class, and 210 in first class.

Tier Points can also be earned on flights operated by Oneworld alliance members such as American Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Qantas. Booking flights with multiple segments can increase your Tier Points. For example, London to Los Angeles via New York will earn more Tier Points than a direct flight.

Any Tier Points that you have accumulated are reset at the end of your membership year. As of the time of writing, BA have unified everyone's Tier Point year to reset 1st April. To maintain your tier status, you need to earn the required Tier Points again within the next membership year.

If you fail to earn enough Tier Points to maintain your tier, you would be downgraded to the next tier, called a soft landing, for instance if you were Gold, but failed to earn enough points to retain Gold then in your next membership year you would be downgraded to Silver.

British Airways Tier Points are essential for climbing the ranks within the Executive Club and unlocking a wealth of benefits. By understanding how to earn and maximize these points, you can enjoy a more rewarding travel experience with British Airways and its Oneworld partners. Whether you’re a frequent flyer or planning a few significant trips, strategically accumulating Tier Points can significantly enhance your future travel.
