Buy Avios for under 1p in Finnair’s biggest sale yet
Finnair has launched another buy Avios sale, and this time the headline number really does tell the story. You can get up to 50% off Avios between 2 and 16 November 2026, with a fixed 10% tier points bonus on top.
The last time Finnair ran a discount sale, in June, the best you could get was 40% off. This one beats it at every level.
As usual with Finnair, though, there are conditions to check before you get excited. The main one is that you need to have joined Finnair Plus before 30 October 2026.
How much do the Avios cost?
You need to buy at least 5,000 Avios to get a discount, and the more you buy, the bigger it gets. The 10% tier points bonus applies whatever you buy.
Avios purchased | Discount | Price per Avios | Cost |
1,000 to 4,000 | 0% | 1.83p | £18.30 to £73.20 |
5,000 to 19,000 | 30% | 1.28p | £64.05 to £243.39 |
20,000 to 49,000 | 35% | 1.19p | £237.90 to £582.86 |
50,000 to 84,000 | 40% | 1.10p | £549.00 to £922.32 |
85,000 to 99,000 | 50% | 0.92p | £777.75 to £905.85 |
100,000 to 200,000 | 50% | 0.88p | £875.00 to £1,750.00 |
Do look at the table carefully as you'll notice that crossing into the next tier can make a bigger purchase cheaper. 100,000 Avios (£875) costs less than 99,000 (£905.85), so check the next step up before you buy.
0.88p per Avios is a VERY reasonable rate to buy Avios at, and under the 1p target you should aim for.
But as Sam wrote last time, Finnair prices the sale separately in each currency, and they don't all match up. If you were to buy your Avios in Japanese Yen, this is the cheapest way to buy them (provided you have a fee free FX card to use).
You'll see the dropdown to change currency at the top of the screen. It'll say "*All transactions are made in euros regardless of the currency selected.". Not true. Sam tested this out and was charged in the currency that he had selected at the time.
Buying the maximum 200,000 Avios in pounds comes to £1,750, or about 0.88p an Avios.
Switch the currency to Japanese yen and the same 200,000 Avios costs ¥333,400. That’s £1,566.98 (based on todays exchange rate), or 0.78p an Avios, a saving of about £183.
Who can take part in the Finnair Avios sale?
This is the fiddly bit. To qualify, you need to be a Finnair Plus member who joined before 30 October 2026, and have at least 50 Avios in your Finnair Plus account.
If you have only ever had a British Airways Club account, opening a Finnair Plus one now will not get you in, because the cut-off date has already passed.
If buying Avios is something you might want to do in the future, it is worth setting up a Finnair Plus account now and transferring in 50 Avios, ready for the next sale as Finnair runs these offers regularly.
What about the tier point bonus?
On top of the discount, Finnair is giving a fixed 10% tier points bonus, which is useful if you are chasing a higher tier in Finnair Plus, which I know a number of you are, now that BA has moved the goalposts for the Club.
The tier points bonus could be worthwhile at the top end. Buy 150,000 Avios and the 10% bonus gives you 15,000 tier points, which is exactly what you need for Finnair Plus Silver, which is oneworld Ruby. This gets you free seat selection seven days before departure, priority check-in, but no lounge access.
There is one limit to know about. Tier points earned from this offer do not count as tier points earned from Finnair flights, and that is a requirement for Platinum Lumo status.
Can you move Finnair Avios to your British Airways account?
Yes. Whatever you buy goes into your Finnair Plus account, and from there you can move it to your British Airways account for free through the Avios website.
To see how far your Avios will take you, try our free Avios Calculator. It is the only tool online that directly compares the Avios needed from BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar, Finnair and Loganair.
Should you buy Avios in the Finnair sale?
Our usual advice is not to buy Avios. Avios sitting in an account can be devalued, and buying them on a hope that you will find a use for them later is how people end up with a pile of points and no trip.
But there is a good exception, and it is having a clear aim. If you have a specific redemption in mind, whether that is one coming up soon where you are a few thousand short, or a big splurge trip you are seriously considering in two or three years’ time, then buying is a sensible way to close the gap.
A 50% discount makes this one easier to justify. It is the best discount Finnair has offered recently, and it beats June’s sale by every metric.
