Avios bookings are far more forgiving than most cash fares, and once you understand how the fees work, you'll realise the situation is probably much better than you feared.

Why Avios bookings are perfect for uncertain travel plans

One of the most underrated benefits of booking flights with Avios is the flexibility baked into every redemption. Unlike many discounted cash fares (aka, the ones 99% of us buy) that leave you with nothing if your plans fall apart, Avios bookings can almost always be cancelled or changed, and you get your points back.

This flexibility has real value, and it's worth factoring in whenever you're deciding whether to spend cash or use Avios on a particular flight.

How much does it cost to cancel an Avios Reward Flight?

The standard cancellation fee is £35 per person. This is deducted from your taxes and fees refund. There are no discounts for British Airways Club status holders. Gold, Silver and Bronze members all pay the same amount.

Do you get your Avios points back when you cancel?

Yes, and this is the really important part. As long as you cancel more than 24 hours before your outbound flight departs, all of your Avios points are returned to your account immediately. Ready to spend on the next holiday!

Do you get your taxes and fees back when you cancel an Avios booking?

There is one important nuance here: if your taxes and charges were less than £35 per person, your cancellation fee is capped at whatever you actually paid. So if you booked a one-way economy flight to Berlin and paid just £2.50 in taxes, you only lose £2.50 when you cancel, not £35.

Avios change fees: How they differ from cancellation fees

If you want to change your travel dates or switch cabin class rather than cancel outright, the fee structure works differently.

Change fees are a flat £35 per person, regardless of what you paid in taxes. Unlike cancellation fees, they are not capped at the tax amount.

This leads to a quirk worth knowing: in some cases, it can actually be cheaper to cancel your booking and rebook from scratch, rather than paying to change it. If your taxes were just £2.50 and you want to move your travel dates, you'd pay £35 to change the booking, but only £2.50 to cancel it and start again.

What are the rules around cancelling return flights?

This is where things get slightly more complicated, so please do pay attention at the back!

You can cancel an Avios booking any time up to 24 hours before your outbound flight departs. As mentioned above, cancel within that window and you get all your Avios back and a refund on your taxes (minus the cancellation fee).

However, once you have flown the outbound leg of your trip, you cannot cancel the return flight and receive a refund. You can still change the date or time of your return flight if Avios seats are available on an alternative service, but a full cancellation and refund is no longer an option.

The one-way booking trick

If there's a realistic chance you might need to cancel your return journey entirely, consider booking two separate one-way Avios tickets instead of a return. This gives you complete and independent cancellation rights over each leg, including the ability to cancel the return for a full refund right up until 24 hours before it departs.

How to cancel an Avios booking

Cancelling an Avios booking is straightforward with two options:

Option 1: Online via ba.com. Head to the Manage My Booking section of ba.com and follow the cancellation steps. This works in the vast majority of cases and takes just a few minutes. Make sure you're logged into the British Airways Club account that was used to make the original booking, logging in with a different account can cause issues.

Option 2: By phone If you run into any problems online, you can call the British Airways Club service centre for your region.

In almost every case, online cancellation is the faster and easier route.
