British Airways has just boosted the sign-up bonus on its Premium Plus Card from 30,000 Avios to a generous 50,000 Avios. This card does not just offer the chance to earn Avios, but also an all important companion voucher allowing for 2 for 1 trips when booking flights using Avios. Apply before 15th July via, and only via, the British Airways website to obtain this deal. More on that down below.

A Mahoosive Welcome Bonus
50,000 Avios after spending £6,000 in your first three months
That’s a 67% increase over the standard 30,000 Avios welcome bonus
For reference, a one way trip in Club Europe to Corfu would be 24,250 Avios. off peak. A return trip in Economy to New York would be 50,000 Avios off peak.
How Many Avios do I Earn on Normal Spending?
1.5 Avios per £1 on all spending
3 Avios per £1 when you fly or book holidays with British Airways
Companion Voucher - One of the Strongest Perks
Spend £15,000 per membership year on this card and earn a companion voucher
The companion voucher offers a free second seat (just pay the taxes and fees) when you fly British Airways, Aer Lingus, or Iberia
Solo travellers do not despair, the companion voucher give a 50% Avios discount if you travel solo
The companion voucher earned with the Premium Plus card can be used in any cabin, as opposed to the companion voucher earned with the free card which can only be used in Economy
In addition, you’ll find extra Club World seats opened up exclusively for companion voucher bookings
Other Perks
Global Assist for 24/7 emergency support overseas
Up to £250,000 travel accident cover on card-booked trips
Flight delay and baggage insurance (e.g., £200 for delays, £750 for 6-hour baggage delays) for trips paid for with this card
Fees & Requirements
Annual fee: £250
Representative APR: 137.8% variable
You must be 18+, a UK resident with a good credit history
You must not have held a BA personal Amex in the last 24 months
Remember, you must pay these cards off in full every month or they will start to accrue that high rate of interest and you may miss out on any points earned. Pay off your balance in full every month, and you will be okay.
About That Sign Up Process...
At the top I mentioned that to obtain this enhanced bonus you must apply via the British Airways website. This is what the offer looks like on the British Airways Website.

The other two ways to apply would be direct on the American Express website, or from a friend via a referral, both of which do not offer the enhanced bonus of 50,000 Avios. This is how the "offer" appears on the American Express website.

And this is how it looks like on a referral a friend sent me this morning.

From a consumer point of view, I find it frustrating that British Airways essentially gate keep this offer, which must result in some less informed consumers applying for the card with a lower bonus, resulting in lost value.

Is This the One?
That extra 20,000 Avios in the welcome bonus transforms this card from a solid option into a truly standout choice - especially if you’ve had your eye on that couple’s trip in Club World. With 50,000 Avios in your account, armed with a companion voucher, you’re on your way towards that dream flight. Combine that with a good earning rate, and all the travel insurance perks, and the Premium Plus Card makes British Airways travel even more rewarding.
