Hilton Honors Gold comes with the Amex Platinum, but what does that get you?

You'll get Hilton Honors Gold if you take out either the Hilton Honors Plus debit card or the Amex Platinum, but is it any good? Over this series we're going to go through the five complimentary hotels statues bundled into the Amex Platinum's £650 annual fee, because it's easy to let them sit unused in your account without ever working out what they're actually worth.

First up is Hilton Honors Gold, and there's one reason Hilton Gold stands apart from the others:

A list of the Hilton Honors Gold benefits

Breakfast.

Yes, I am a hobbit.

Unlike most mid-tier hotel statuses, which deal in vague promises of enhanced experiences and modest points bonuses, Hilton Gold gives you a breakfast benefit at most brands, provided you select it.

Before we get into the benefit itself, it's worth knowing exactly what that status covers, because Hilton's portfolio is sizeable.

Which hotels does Hilton Gold status actually cover?

Hilton now operates 27 distinct hotel brands, and your Gold status is recognised across every one of them, if you book direct or via Amex. That is a useful spread when you consider how differently these brands are positioned.

At the top sit the luxury names:

  • Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts

  • Conrad Hotels & Resorts

  • LXR Hotels & Resorts

  • Signia Hilton

  • NoMad

Swimming pool

One step down, Hilton's lifestyle brands lean into local character:

  • Canopy by Hilton

  • Graduate by Hilton

  • Tempo by Hilton

  • Motto by Hilton

  • Undergraduate by Hilton, a new addition to this group, though stays don't begin until 2027

The full-service core of the portfolio is:

  • Hilton Hotels & Resorts

  • DoubleTree by Hilton

Hilton's soft brand collections, where independent hotels retain their own identity while plugging into Hilton Honors, include:

  • Curio Collection by Hilton

  • Tapestry Collection by Hilton, a tier below Curio on price

  • Outset Collection by Hilton, a newer indie boutique brand launched in 2025

  • Apartment Collection by Hilton, which brings apartment-style stays into the fold

For longer trips or families who want more space, these all offer suite-style accommodation with kitchens or kitchenettes:

  • Embassy Suites by Hilton

  • Homewood Suites by Hilton

  • Home2 Suites by Hilton

  • LivSmart Studios by Hilton

At the accessible end, these cover everything from reliable business travel to budget stays, all with Gold status recognised:

  • Hilton Garden Inn

  • Hampton by Hilton

  • Tru by Hilton

  • Spark by Hilton

Finally, Select by Hilton is Hilton's newest independent hotel brand, currently represented by YOTEL, and Small Luxury Hotels of the World along with AutoCamp round out the wider portfolio as partner collections.

That is the scale of what you're working with, plenty of choice!

What benefits do you get with Hilton Honors Gold?

Gold doesn't exist on it's own. It sits on top of two lower tiers, and as is almost always the case with status, you get benefits of the basic membership, plus the Silver add ons, and then the extra Gold benefits. It's worth seeing the full stack, because it makes clear just how much Gold actually adds on top.

Every Hilton Honors member, free to join, gets:

  • A guaranteed Hilton Honors discount rate when booking direct on Hilton.com or the app.

  • Points on every stay, redeemable for free nights, with travel partners, and for experiences.

  • No resort fees on reward stays booked with 100% Points.

  • Digital check-in and check-out through the app.

  • Choose Your Room, letting you pick from available rooms up to 24 hours ahead of arrival.

  • Digital Key, unlocking your door with your phone.

  • Free WiFi throughout the hotel.

  • Access to exclusive Hilton Honors experiences, auctioned or redeemable with points.

  • Late check-out when available, requested through the front desk.

At Silver, earned through 10 nights, 4 stays or $2,500 of spend in a year, the following are added on:

  • A 20% bonus on the base points earned on every stay.

  • Two free bottles of water on arrival, at select hotels.

  • A free fifth night when you book a standard room using 100% Points.

  • 15% off at All-Inclusive spas across the Hilton portfolio.

Gold, the status that comes bundled with the Amex Platinum, adds on top of all of the above:

  • An 80% bonus on base points, rather than Silver's 20%. In practice, that's 18 points for every £1 spent at most brands, 9 points per £1 at Home2 Suites, Homewood Suites, Spark, Tru, Apartment Collection and YOTEL, and 3 points per £1 at LivSmart Studios.

  • Space-available room upgrades, up to Executive Floor room types, confirmed at check-in rather than in advance.

  • A daily food and beverage credit in the US, or complimentary continental breakfast in the rest of the world, as your MyWay benefit.

  • Milestone bonuses of 10,000 points for every 10 nights once you've stayed 40 nights in a calendar year, useful if you're a frequent Hilton guest rather than an occasional one.

That upgrade benefit is worth highlighting, because it isn't automatic.

Hilton's terms are explicit that upgrades are on a space-available basis, decided at check-in, and a specific list of brands doesn't offer them at all.

Embassy Suites, Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton, Tru, Spark, Homewood Suites, Home2 Suites, LivSmart Studios and Motto are excluded from the upgrade benefit entirely.

If you're staying at one of those, the value of your Gold status comes almost entirely from the breakfast benefit and the points bonus, not from a nicer room. And if that upgrade does land you in a room type with Executive Lounge access, you and one guest get in for the length of your stay, though the same lounge access disqualifies you from the separate food and beverage credit, covered below.

How does the breakfast benefit actually work?

Most guides on this will look different to ours as they're written for a US audience, and the US version of this benefit isn't what you'll actually get in the UK. It's also not automatic. Breakfast is one option within your MyWay benefit, so you need to select it within your Hilton Honors account, rather than assume it will just appear.

In the US, Gold members will get a daily food and beverage credit which may or may not cover the cost of breakfast. The credit will also vary by brand: a smaller credit at brands like Hilton Garden Inn, and a larger one at full-service and lifestyle brands.

Outside the US, and this includes the UK and most of Europe, the equivalent choice at many brands is a complimentary continental breakfast rather than a cash credit, for you and one companion. This isn't universal across every brand though. Complimentary continental breakfast is offered at a defined list of brands outside the US, including Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Conrad, Curio Collection, DoubleTree, Canopy, Graduate, Hilton Garden Inn, LXR, NoMad and Signia. Motto by Hilton, by contrast, only offers the food and beverage credit globally, never breakfast, and it's worth checking your specific brand before you book if breakfast is the reason you're choosing the hotel.

One detail worth flagging for anyone who ends up in an Executive Lounge: if your upgrade grants you complimentary access to a lounge that serves breakfast seven days a week, you lose eligibility for the separate breakfast or F&B benefit. You get one or the other, not both. So the hobbits out there hoping for second breakfast? I'm afraid not.

What about lounge access and late checkout?

Lounge access can materialise if you're upgraded into a room that qualifies, but it isn't a guaranteed benefit at this tier, and Hilton's own terms make clear it's tied entirely to the room type, not the status level itself. Diamond members get lounge access whether or not they're upgraded. Gold members don't.

Late checkout sits in a similar bracket. It isn't something you can rely on at busy properties, and Hilton's terms confirm it must be requested and is subject to availability for every tier below Diamond Reserve. I have always found that if you ask in a polite and friendly manner, you will often get it, but that probably says more about the availability then my own charms!

What are the catches?

Something which applies to every status on this list in conjunction with the Platinum Amex: you must book directly with the hotel in question, in this case a Hilton, to trigger your benefits. The only other way to book would be through the Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts.

Book through any other third-party site and there is a good chance your Gold status will not be recognised at check-in, regardless of how the reservation itself reads. Hilton's terms are unambiguous on this point. Bookings through non-direct channels, opaque websites, or unlisted travel packages simply don't qualify for on-property benefits, even if the underlying stay is otherwise eligible for points.

Upgrades are never promised and can be modest when they do come through, a slightly better room on the same floor rather than anything transformative. And as covered above, a meaningful chunk of Hilton's budget and extended-stay brands don't offer the upgrade benefit at all, so it's worth checking which brand you're booking before you factor an upgrade into your expectations. A good rule of thumb is just to never expect the "If availability allows" perks, although you could argue why list it at all.

Breakfast needs the same check: confirm it's on offer at your specific brand and select it as your MyWay benefit, rather than assuming it will show up automatically.

Is Hilton Honors Gold worth it on the Amex Platinum?

Even accounting for those limitations, Hilton Honors Gold is a good benefit to have. At the brands where breakfast is on offer, this means you're extracting value from virtually every stay, regardless of whether the upgrade comes through. And the fact that status is recognised across 27 brands, from Waldorf Astoria down to Hampton, means it travels well whatever kind of trip you're on.

Enrol it, book direct, select your MyWay benefit, and it earns its keep almost every time you use it.
