What is a Mixed Class Fare?

If you’ve ever searched for flights online and noticed that your ticket includes two different cabin classes, you might have stumbled across a mixed class fare. But what exactly does that mean, and why might airlines like British Airways and Virgin Atlantic offer them?

Mixed fares are a great idea. View from a plane window at sunset, showing a Rolls Royce engine and a sea of clouds below, with a blue and orange horizon.
Mixed fares may well give you the best of both worlds in terms of value and comfort

Let’s dive in.

What is a Mixed Class Fare on a plane?

A mixed class fare is when your journey is made up of two or more different cabin classes. For example, you could fly Premium Economy on your outbound flight, and return in Business Class. Or you might find yourself flying Economy one way, and Premium Economy on the way back.

It’s a flexible way to travel that lets you enjoy a touch of luxury without committing to higher costs for the whole journey.

Why Do Mixed Class Fares Exist?

There are a few reasons you might come across mixed class fares:

  • Cost savings – Upgrading one way instead of both legs keeps prices down while still giving you a taste of premium travel.

  • Availability – Sometimes, only certain cabin classes are available on certain flights, especially during busy travel seasons.

  • Flexibility – Travellers may want extra comfort on a long overnight flight but are happy with a simpler cabin on a shorter daytime leg.

It’s essentially a way to mix and match your journey to suit your needs and your budget.

Mixed Class Fares with British Airways

British Airways is well known for its range of cabins, from Economy to the luxurious First Class. With BA, you might find yourself flying Economy out of London and Premium Economy back from New York, or perhaps upgrading to Club World (Business Class) just for the overnight return.

Mixed fares with British Airways could mean using points to upgrade to Premium Economy or Club World long-haul. Airplane at an airport gate during twilight, connected to jet bridge. Airport tower and city lights in the background; calm atmosphere.

This works brilliantly if, for example, you want a good night’s sleep on the way home but don’t mind sitting in Economy during the daytime flight out.

BA’s booking system sometimes automatically shows these fares if a class isn’t available both ways. Other times, it’s a smart way to keep costs reasonable while still enjoying part of the premium experience.

Mixed Class Fares with Virgin Atlantic

Virgin Atlantic is famous for its stylish cabins, from Economy Light right up to Upper Class. A mixed class fare with Virgin might look like flying Premium Economy to Los Angeles and returning in Upper Class, complete with the glamorous Clubhouse lounge before take-off.

Mixed Fares with Virgin Atlantic could mean getting to experience their Club House. View from airplane window showing a red engine and wing over a vast desert landscape with clear skies, conveying a sense of travel.

Virgin also sometimes offers upgrades on just one leg of your journey, making it an attractive option for those who want to balance comfort with cost.

There is also the option to do a mixed class fare on one journey. Let's say you are flying from London to Salt Lake City. You could fly Premium between Heathrow and JFK in New York, and change to Economy for the rest of the journey on Delta. This can be because in this example, premium economy isn't available on the second flight.

Is a Mixed Class Fare Worth It?

For many travellers, absolutely! A mixed class fare can be the perfect compromise between budget and comfort. You could enjoy flat beds, fine dining, and lounge access on the most important leg of your trip, while saving money on the other.

Lounge access is a great perk of many premium cabins and is a great way to start your journey be it on the outward bound leg, or the journey home. I would always recommend having a quick Google of the lounge to see if you think it is worth it, and reading an up to date view. We have done a number of Lounge Reviews which can be found via This Link, so head on over to see if we have covered your lounge of choice.

It’s also a clever way to try out a premium cabin for the first time without splurging on a full return ticket.

Tips for Booking Mixed Class Fares

  • Compare carefully – Sometimes two single fares in different cabins are cheaper than one combined mixed fare.

  • Check baggage rules – Your allowance usually follows the lower cabin, so double-check before packing.

  • Be flexible – You’ll find more options if you’re open to different routes or times.

  • Use points – If you’re part of a loyalty scheme like BA Executive Club or Virgin Flying Club, you can often mix classes using Avios or Virgin Points.

Final Thoughts

A mixed class fare is a brilliant way to tailor your trip. Whether you’re flying British Airways or Virgin Atlantic, it’s all about balance – splurging where it matters most, and saving where it doesn’t. Next time you’re booking flights, don’t be surprised if you spot this option. It might just be the smartest (and most comfortable) way to travel.
