Welcome back to our Thursday Travel Tips series – where we show you how to turn everyday spending into extraordinary travel rewards.
Last time, we explored how to earn Virgin Points online through Shops Away. But did you know you can also earn Virgin Points simply by paying with your card instore, including your debit card? It’s one of the most effortless ways to boost your Flying Club balance while you go about your day.

How In Store Earning Works
The process is refreshingly simple. You start by logging in to the Shops Away portal and registering your debit or credit card (click here to be taken there). Once your card details are linked, give it 24 hours to activate. After that, you can shop as you normally would at participating retailers, using your registered card.
Every eligible purchase is tracked automatically – no vouchers, no scanning codes, no special apps required. Within a few days, you’ll see your Virgin Points appear in your Shops Away account as ‘Pending’. After your purchase is confirmed, they’ll move to ‘Approved’ and land in your Flying Club balance.

Why It’s Worth Doing
What makes instore earning particularly appealing is that it doesn’t require any change to your habits. Once your card is registered, you simply shop and pay as usual. Unlike online shopping portals where you need to click through each time, in store purchases track automatically as long as you use your linked card. Plus, you'll get that 1,000 point bonus on your first in store purchase before 13 October 2025. That £4 coffee in Paul could land you an extra 1,000 Virgin Points, and if that isn’t worth the eye-watering price of coffee at the moment, I don’t know what is

Things to Keep in Mind
Points will not be awarded on cancelled or returned purchases, and not every type of payment works – for instance, Apple Pay and PayPal do not qualify. It’s also important to allow a little time: transactions first show as pending, then move to your Flying Club account once approved, usually within 45 days.
Earn Virgin Points In Store With Your Debit Card: Final Thoughts
Linking your debit or credit card to Shops Away is one of the easiest hacks for everyday earning. Whether you’re dining out, shopping for clothes, or treating yourself to something special, the points you earn instore can help bring your next Virgin Atlantic adventure closer.
If you haven’t already, take five minutes to register your card on the Shops Away portal, browse the current offers, and enjoy the feeling of your Flying Club balance ticking upwards with every tap of your card.
Until next week – happy shopping, and happy travels.
