Huge new American Express Gold Sign Up Bonus

American Express has improved their sign up bonus for the Gold Card, with new sign up's eligible for 30,000 membership reward points if you join before July 16th.

As usual there are some caveats to being eligible for the bonus, from the American Express website, "Earn 25,000 Membership Rewards points, PLUS spend anything in month 15 and get 5,000 Membership Rewards points"

The American Express Gold Card is free for the first year, after that it is £195 per year. So you could be earning 25,000 Membership Rewards points for free!

To earn the additional 5,000 Membership Rewards points then you would have to keep your card into the second year and make a single purchase in month 15 to trigger the earning of those additional 5,000 Membership Reward points.

As is normal with these type of cards there is a hefty APR applied to the card, 88.8%. But, this is only applies to balances that are not paid off in full at the end of your statement month, so if you are the sort of person who would not be able to clear your balance every month, then I would not recommend this card.

Not everyone will be eligible for the bonus, those who have held a personal American Express card within the previous 24 months will not be eligible for this offer. If you were sign up, and you have held a personal American Express card within the previous 24 months, you would be entitled to all other benefits, besides sign up bonus.

The joy of holding Membership Rewards points are that they are a bit more flexible than Avios or Virgin Points. This is because Membership Rewards points can be converted into other schemes, this includes:

• Avios

• Virgin Points

• Emirates Skywards

• Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer

• Marriott Bonvoy

• Hilton Honors

• And many more

This flexibility allows you to hold onto these points and then convert them into the scheme of your choice once you know what you would like to use your points towards!

The Gold card has a range of earning amounts, this includes:

3X Points On American Express Travel for every £1 spent

2X Points On purchases made directly with airlines for every £1 spent

1X Points On purchases for every £1 spent

Invite a Friend, and earn at least 9000 Membership Rewards Points if they are approved - up to 90,000 a year

Other benefits to the Gold card include four complimentary lounge visits per year via Priority Pass, Travel Accident and Travel Inconvenience Insurance for bookings made using the card, 2,500 point bonuses for hitting various annual spending targets, and £5 back on eligible Deliveroo purchases, up to twice per month.

I have personally used an American Express Gold Card and transferred the points into Avios, and Virgin Points to pair with a Companion Voucher earned on a different card. I see it as an extremely valuable way to get you on your points journey.
