I recently stayed two nights at the Maldron Hotel Cathedral Quarter in Manchester, and I was genuinely impressed by what you get for the money, easily justifying writing a review. At just £60 per night, you're lucky if you could find a Travelodge for that money. But for my money I was able to get a deluxe double, which included room service, a full service bar, and a gym! At this price-point, that represents outstanding value.

About Maldron Hotels
For those unfamiliar with the brand, Maldron is an Irish hotel chain owned by the Dalata Hotel Group - Ireland's largest hotel operator. They've been gradually expanding into the UK market, and now total 56 hotels across their various brands. Maldron represents the more budget friendly option within their portfolio. The Manchester Cathedral Quarter opened in 2024, and is their second Maldron hotel in Manchester.
Check-in
Check-in is self-service, but without any of the usual frustrations. Simply put your surname in, how many nights you're staying, and you will be presented with your reservation. Next, you're asked how many keycards you would like. The keycards can be found to the left of the display, and you simply place each card on top of the black pad to the left. Don't worry if what I am saying sounds daunting. The screen explains the process exceptionally well, and fret not, there is a 24hr manned reception just out of shot.

The Room
The room itself punched well above its price point. You get a spacious layout with a walk-in shower, heated LED mirror, comfortable bed, and all the essentials including bottles of water, a safe, iron, and some tea/coffee facilities. The contemporary design with teal accent features feels fresh rather than budget, and everything was spotlessly clean. USB-C ports can be found beside the bed, in addition to a standard plug. The TV was okay quality, not exactly cinema level, but it did allow you to cast from your phone, meaning you could watch whatever you wanted. A huge tick in my book.

The breakfast represented excellent value too at only £13 - full English with all the trimmings, plus a continental selection of pastries, fruit, cereals and yogurt.
There's even a gym of acceptable quality (for a hotel) if you're feeling virtuous after that fry-up.

Just don't expect to be able to use that pull-up bar...
The Verdict
This isn't a tired budget chain going through the motions - it's a genuinely good hotel that smashes comparably priced options, think your Premier Inn's, Travelodge or Ibis, out of the park. But I don't think these are fair comparisons because the Maldron is so much better equipped. Instead, compare it to a Hampton by Hilton, or AC by Marriott, but at this price-point, the Maldron Cathedral Quarter cannot be beat.
