Welcome back to our Thursday Travel Tips series – where we help you turn everyday spending into extraordinary travel rewards.
This week, we’re diving into one of the lesser known earning opportunities available right now – and most people don’t even realise it exists.

Switching your home broadband could earn you thousands of Avios or Virgin Points in one go. If you’re paying for internet anyway (and let’s face it, we all are), you might as well let it take you closer to your next flight.
Why Broadband Is a Travel Points Sweet Spot
Broadband providers frequently partner with Avios and Virgin Red to offer large sign-up bonuses through their shopping portals. Unlike standard online shopping, which might earn a handful of points per pound, broadband switches often offer 4,000, 6,000, even 11,000+ points at once.
Most people stay with the same provider after their contract ends, often paying more than new customers. By switching, you could save money and earn a major chunk of points without changing your daily routine.
The Best Current Avios Broadband Offers
Here are the broadband providers currently offering Avios when you switch through portals such as the Avios eStore (our Avios eStore guide can be found here) :

How to Earn Thousands Points When You Switch Broadband (It’s Easier Than You Think)
The process is refreshingly simple.
Start by logging in to your chosen points portal – Avios eStore, or Shops Away/Virgin Red for Virgin Points. Search for broadband and browse the available offers. When you’ve chosen your provider, click through the portal link, which allows the transaction to track. Then just sign up for your broadband as normal.
Once your new connection is live and the cooling-off period has passed, your points will appear in your account. They usually show as ‘pending’ first before being approved and added to your balance.
No promo codes. No forms. No hassle.

Why It’s Worth Switching Regularly
Even if you’re happy with your current provider, it's worth checking when your contract ends. After the initial term (often 12–18 months), most providers quietly increase your monthly price. Switching can improve your speeds, reduce your bill, and earn a large lump sum of points all at once.
To put it in perspective:
A typical online shop might earn 100 - 300 points.
A mobile contract might earn 2,000 - 4,000 points.
A broadband switch can earn up to 11,500 points.
It’s one of the easiest ways to supercharge your balance from a single transaction.
Avios or Virgin Points – Which Should You Go For?
Both schemes offer strong broadband deals, so the best choice depends on how you travel.
If you prefer flying Virgin Atlantic, and the routes they fly serve you best then concentrate on utilising their Shops Away website.
If, however, you prefer British Airways, or perhaps want to give another oneworld airline a go such as Qatar then Avios would be your best bet.
Sam and I like to hedge our bets, and essentially flit between the two. Virgin Atlantic are great for flying across the pond to the US or Canada for us, but as self diagnosed Asia obsessives, Avios give us the flexibility of flying with BA or Qatar when going East, as the furthest east Virgin fly is Bengaluru.
Things to Keep in Mind
A few tips to maximise success:
Make sure you complete the switch through the portal link to ensure tracking.
Avoid combining cashback sites or voucher codes unless specifically allowed.
Some offers only reward new customers, so check the details.
And don’t worry if the points don’t appear immediately – they often take a few weeks after activation to clear.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Let This Opportunity Go to Waste
Switching your broadband is one of the highest-value, lowest-effort travel hacks available. It takes just a few minutes to compare deals, but the reward will help you boost your points to get you that next flight!
Until next week – happy browsing, and happy travels.
